THE THIRD MARMARA SEA SYMPOSIUM WAS HELD IN ISTANBUL, TURKEY

The third of the Marmara Sea Symposium organized by Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) in cooperation with the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South - NALAS was held on the 21st of November 2017 in Istanbul, Turkey with the theme of "Regional Cooperation on Danube."

The opening speeches made by Prof. Izzet Ozturk, Member of Scientific Committee of the Marmara Sea Symposium, Ivan Zavadsky, Executive Secretary of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), Kelmend Zajazi, Executive Director of NALAS and Mevlut Uysal, President of MMU and Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

In his opening speech, Mr. Mevlut Uysal emphasized the importance of local and regional cooperation for the Marmara Sea and added “I hope this symposium will provide a basis for a better world in the future.”   

“ Interaction Among Danube River - Black Sea - Marmara Sea” was discussed in the first session under the moderation of Prof. Bayram Ozturk from Istanbul University, Faculty of Aquatic Sciences. After “Historical Changes of the Marmara Sea Ecosystem in a Holistic Approach” were addressed by the experts and academics, the last session on “Sources of Urban Pollution and Prevention Activities in the Marmara Sea” moderated by Mr. Murat Turan, Head of Marine and Coastal Management Department of the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.

 

On the second day of the programme, round table meetings were organized with the participation of academicians, experts, state officials and local government representatives and they exchanged their ideas on the current issues. There was also a photograph exhibition composed of winning images of the Marmara Sea Photography Contest as part of the Symposium.
